Spiritual Awakening Body Changes and Rebirth

spirituality, nature, redwoods,
I haven't written about the body and physical aspects of spiritual awakening in some time, so I felt like circling back to this topic. I expect to talk about it much more next year, which will be dedicated to the awakened body. This is the year of the awakened heart; there's no reason behind this. I just felt like doing it this way. Here's the blog post about the awakened heart, which I kicked off the year with:

Becoming Heart Strong

Just as the mind and heart go through big shifts during an awakening so too must the body. The body goes through as much shifting as you need to come into your natural healthy body. Your natural healthy body is not something to be found in a fitness or yoga magazine, and it certainly isn't likely to be found in a fashion magazine. You would do well to get rid of any of those types of body propaganda. It perpetuates so many lies.

No, your body is your own, and your body knows exactly what shape it naturally should be to be in optimal health. As such, a spiritual awakening simply takes you down the path to becoming that natural shape and will require any and all changes necessary to get there.

There Is No Idea to Believe In

The body does not believe in ideas.

Let me pause to let that sink in.

The body does not believe in ideas.

Is it in yet? Or are you still thinking about how you should look and wanting (and hoping) that I'll say that some particular image and the ideas around beauty are what you should achieve? Is the mind looking for an external source to compare against?

The body does not make comparisons. The body does not think. It senses life. It tells you when it is hungry. It tells you how much exercise it needs. It tells you when something needs attention, aka you feel pain. It is quite an amazing and amazingly intelligent organism once you get to know it. Do you know yours?

The Detoxification of the Body

These days a lot of people overdo detoxification through supplements and cleanses. They're trying to impose an idea of purity on the body. A whole set of ideas and methodologies (and they're not all bad) has grown up around detoxification. It's a kind of heavy-handed mental game that is trying to deduce where optimal physical health should be, which is also getting monetized and widely distributed in health stores. As I said, this isn't all bad, but your body knows better, and when the body decides to detox of its own accord, it's a whole other ballgame. Because it really knows what to flush out, and for those of you who have awakened, you probably have gone through detoxification phases. This phase is about getting rid of a lot of toxins including drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, and so forth. It can come in waves, or it can come all at once. It may also include detoxing from sugar, preservative heavy foods, caffeine, red meat, starches, processed foods, and a host of other things. Some changes will be more permanent than others. You may be able to eat meat again after processing out some old junk inside you, but perhaps you'll notice your body wants very little of it.

After at least the initial detoxification, you can finally get to work. Sometimes students who come to me assume that they're all good and done when this phase ends. But really, this is just clearing off the workspace to get into the deeper core issues that were hidden by a lot of other initial junk. With that junk gone, you can go down into the deeper issues, and you can start to hear what the body actually has to say about things.

The Shifting of Dietary Needs

Listening to the body requires you to clean it out. A lot of people are still so familiar to certain kinds of junk that they've taught their body to want unhealthy things. The desire and physical craving are wrapped together and are coming from a corrupted sense of self-nourishment. If it's too bad, fasting can be really helpful to reset the system. But this is something that should be done mindfully and for many of you with physician or nutritionist supervision.

The point is to get clear internally to really notice what foods your body wants and not what it has gotten accustomed to. With this awareness, you start to shift your diet very consciously. I wrote this blog post a long time ago about that topic:

Dietary Shifts and Food Needs in the Spiritual Awakening Process

You'll find that some foods are problematic to dealing with deeper issues. For instance, you may take bread out of your diet while dealing with some issues, especially in the lower energy centers. But it may be able to come back later. Different foods reinforce, bury, or mask different issues. It's quite interesting actually. Anyway, this unmasking and deeper healing are often the impetus of dietary shifts during awakening. Afterwards, you have a lot more freedom again in what you can eat, but because tuning into your body makes you so aware of the effects of anything you put in your body, it becomes increasingly unlikely that you'll want to eat anything that makes you feel poorly or at least not at optimal health.

Touching a New Level of Physical Health

Because the body lives in the present moment and senses life, you will know quite emphatically when an issue has fully dropped out of the body or a spiritual realization has fully integrated into you. You can't fake it. You simply sense it. With that comes an awareness of a new level of physical health that you couldn't have imagined. And how could you? The ego only knows what it has experienced in the past. It's at this point that many of you truly realize how unhealthy you were in the past. The amazing part is that many of you who thought you were in good health may find out how wrong you've been about that. Carrying issues affects not just the mind and the heart, but it affects the body too. Partly, this is because the actions we take are born of fears, pain, trauma, and other issues. But also, unprocessed wounds stay in our energy field, which means they stay in our physical space.

All in all, to get rid of unprocessed pain and to release limiting issues leads us towards greater physical flexibility, relaxation, and general energy. In general, those three descriptors are great benchmarks to knowing if an issue has truly dropped from the body. But then again, when it happens, you won't need anyone to tell you.

Your Changing Body

The further you align with your awakened self, the further your body comes too. Nothing is separate. So how could the body not come?

With those changes, you are coming into the body shape that most suits you. As I've already emphatically stated, this isn't an image seen in a TV show. Most of those images are highly selected, and it has created a kind of brainwashing for people in Western Society. As such, some of you overly thin women will find yourself rounding out, but in the awakened space, there is a great deal of life and vitality to that roundness. It is not unhealthy adipose brought on by binge eating and slurping down ice cream smoothies. No. Your body would let you know immediately that that is not okay. It is simply the shape you come to when you eat well and exercise appropriately.

Some men may suddenly find themselves a lot thinner after years of working out to put on muscle to meet male ideals of physical attractiveness. Those of you who worked out too much will workout far less. Those of you who haven't exercised enough will need to exercise perhaps starting as soon as the initial detox phase. Some of you may really not recognize your body after all the spiritual shifts. Others will feel a great difference internally, but will look about the same. It really isn't about looks at all. It is about sensing what is most true and healthy for your body.

The Revitalized Body

The revitalized body is not interested in pain and suffering. You may be surprised at what physical activities it no longer wants to do. But the deeper you are grounded in this space, there is no division anymore. There isn't my body wants this, but my mind wants that. The two have come together. Everything is coming together. You are coming fully and more deeply into the Now. In this present moment is where all the energy you'll ever need to live your life is. This is incredibly obvious, is it not? Yet when we've put all our focus on the future or past, we devitalize and de-energize our body. Our energy is being projected out somewhere else. It is projected out to events, relationships, lovers, jobs, etc. We are constantly chasing ourselves. We are then getting exhausted. We then reach for caffeine, sugar, and other uppers to keep us going in the impossible chase to find our lost energy. Without that unhealthy mentality, we are not stressing our bodies. As such, the revitalized body is also an unstressed body. The mind is functioning appropriately and in a healthy manner, and the body tells us this by how it feels in terms of energy and vitality.

The Rebirth of Your Sexuality

I know some of you have had your sexuality turned off during awakening. This is part of the rebuilding process for many of you. When so much of your energy and focus is elsewhere, your sexuality can get put on the backburner. But it, too, is a sacred part of your body. Nothing is left out, and coming into your sexuality in an awakened way is a whole other ball of wax. It is no longer about procreation and pleasure. Those are not forgotten, but deeper interests towards union and the flow of orgasmic energy are ignited. These can be cultivated within your own space, and they probably should be at first to fully come into the depth of sexual fulfillment that you already offer yourself.

For others who experience awakening more specifically as the rising of kundalini energy, you may be overwhelmed by sexual energy. This needs to be focused inwards to continue the shifting. Expending your sexual energy with others can be depleting for both men and women, and especially if this is really strong, learning how to have a personal spiritual sexual practice can be deeply rewarding and help heal and release a lot of issues. For more on that, you can check out this blog post:

Integrating Your Awakening Through a Spiritual Sexual Practice

Most of all, the rebirthing of your sexuality is not a continuation of desire-filled craving, but one of enjoying the joy of sharing sexuality with oneself and others. It has no goal of orgasm. It simply enjoys the space and whatever is freely offered, which is how all of life is viewed from the awakened space.

The Humanity of the Body

Yet, for all of this, we will not be perfect. We will still get warts. We will still get sick. We we still have hearing loss, vision loss, hair loss, and other things as the body continues the journey towards death. This is inevitable. We don't get a super-body after a spiritual awakening. We simply come into full appreciation and ownership of our body. We can sense its needs better, and in so doing, we can maintain a better health than we ever could before. We are also likely to be far more sensitive to a lot of things because we are no longer numb, and there is no need to de-sensitive ourselves again. That will simply rebuild pain inside of us.

Nonetheless, you can always do whatever you want. That is the power of choice. I would hope you fully embrace this gift so that you can find out what it is like to truly dance this divine dance of human life and being in a human body.
